Steven E. Stemler and Damian J. Bebell, authors of The School Mission Statement: Values, Goals, and Identities in American Education, appeared in the Albany Times-Union to discuss testing and school mission statements. Stemler and Bebell recently conducted research in New York City public schools regarding the emphasis placed on student test scores. Their research found that teachers and administrators were not as enthusiastic over the city, state and federal emphasis on the English Language Arts (ELA) and math test scores as U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan perceived them to be.
